Hermiston School District is entering its sixth year of Outdoor School (ODS) at Camp Elkanah. West Park Elementary School will be the first to visit the camp this year, as they head up on Monday. WP will be followed by Desert View, Highland Hills, Loma Vista, Rocky Heights, and then Sunset Elementary School.
ODS is a three-day, two-night camp, where students will have the opportunity to experience a new environment outside of the classroom. Their first day at camp will start with a tour, followed by lunch, learning stations, dinner, and activity time. Day two includes more learning stations instructed by natural resource-focused entities, such as the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Environmental Quality, and many others.
Students will also have the responsibility of taking turns helping with meal clean up and cabin duties while at camp. When students return to the classroom, they will bridge what they learned at ODS with classroom activities related to their nature studies, e.g. classroom stream environment activities coupled with stream water and animal observation at camp.
Community involvement this year will consist of high school student volunteers supervising during the day and adult staff and community members staying overnight. Estudiantes del 5o grado salen a la Escuela Al Aire Libre
El Distrito Escolar de Hermiston está entrando en su sexto año llevando a los estudiantes a la Escuela Al Aire Libre (siglas en inglés ODS) al Campamento Elkanah. La Primaria West Park será la primera escuela que visitará el campamento este año, salen el lunes. Desert View seguirá luego Highland Hills, Loma Vista, Rocky Heights, y después la Primaria Sunset.
La Escuela Al Aire Libre dura tres dias, dos noches acampando, donde los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de experimentar un nuevo ambiente fuera del salón de clases. Su primer día en el campamento comenzará con un recorrido, después el almuerzo, estaciones de aprendizaje, cena y luego una actividad. El segundo día incluye más estaciones de aprendizaje instruidos por entidades de recursos naturales, tales como el Departamento para la Pesca y Vida Silvestre del Estado de Oregon, la Administración Nacional de Asuntos Oceanográficos y Atmosféricos, Departmento de Calidad del Medio Ambiente y muchos más.
Los estudiantes tendrán la resposabildiad de turnarse para limpiar después de las comidas y harán quehaceres en la cabaña mientras estén en el campamento. Cuando los estudiantes regresen a los salones de clase, ellos unirán lo que aprendieron en la Escuela Al Aire Libre con las actividades del salón de clases que estén relacionadas con los estudios de la naturaleza, por ejemplo, las actividades con el medio ambiente del arroyo, y las observaciones que hicieron del arroyo y los animales mientras estuvieron en el campamento.
La comunidad se podrá involucrar este año por medio de estudiantes de la prepratoria que se darán como voluntarios y supervisarán a los estudiantes durante el día y el personal de la escuela y miembros de la comunidad se quedarán en la noche.
